Haitian Lutherans implore LCMS for prayers following Tropical Storm Isaac

Residents wade through a street that flooded due to Tropical Storm Isaac in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012. Tropical Storm Isaac swept across Haiti’s southern peninsula early Saturday, dousing a capital city prone to flooding and adding to the misery of a poor nation still trying to recover from the 2010 earthquake. Our partners in Haiti implore us to keep the people of that beleaguered country in our prayers today and in the coming days. Lophane Laurnet, a member of an Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti congregation, provides this Tropical Storm Isaac update from earlier this morning: Many homes in and around Jacmel and Baudouin have lost their roofs, and the residents are now homeless. The church in Jacmel has suffered some damage, so parishioners could not worship there this morning. Homeless storm victims are sheltering in the church in Baudouin, thus no worship service there this morning neither. The rains are continuing. Gardens have been washed out. Livestock have been scattered. Some villagers have been injured by wind-whipped tin roofs. Roads have been washed out and phone service is practically nil. The situation is indeed difficult in Haiti.
Please join us in this prayer today for our brothers and sisters in Tropical Storm Isaac’s path: Your hand, O Lord, in days of old, was strong to heal and save; it triumphed over ills and death, over darkness and the grave. O be our great deliverer still, the Lord of life and death. Restore and quicken, soothe and bless our brothers and sisters in Haiti, with Your life giving breath. We thank You for sparing the people of Haiti from the effects of a major hurricane and we pray that others in the path of the storm would also be spared. Bless and keep the aid workers as they set about their relief work. Move the hearts of Your people to respond in love out of the blessings You have given them so that those in need may be restored. Enable the pastors and other church workers who will minister to those affected by Tropical Storm Isaac to speak boldly of Your love and in great measure bear Your mercy as they point all to Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen
